James E. Lewis Museum of Art at Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD
The Lewis Museum of art in Baltimore, Maryland has a collection of works that cover centuries and cultures of art, including work representing European, African, black American, Latino and Asian artists. Additionally, we have special collections, such as our collection of Asian Prints and 16th through 20th century African art and artifacts. We also hold a substantial collection of works of modern art by artists such as Josef Albers, Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Elizabeth Catlett, Pablo Picasso, Victor Keppler, Barbara Morgan, Gordon Parks and Jacob Lawrence. Our current exhibition is a traveling exhibit of photographs of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Civil Rights Movement, and the 1968 Poor People's Campaign. Additionally, we are currently organizing an exhibition of William Johnson paintings and works on paper from our collection, which will tour across the US through a collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Barack Obama and Michelle Obama recently chose William Johnson as one of the artists whose art will hang in the White House.
